Slinging & Signalling Training

Lifting chains and hooks used in slinging and signalling training

This course covers the knowledge and practical skills required to carry out the role of slinger/signaller safely and in accordance with current legislation. It is suitable for anyone involved in attaching loads to cranes or directing crane movements on site.

Training is delivered onsite and is accredited by the Association of Industrial Truck Trainers (AITT). On successful completion, delegates receive a nationally recognised certificate valid for three years.

  • Legislation relevant to slinging and lifting operations (LOLER, PUWER, HSWA)
  • Roles and responsibilities of the slinger/signaller
  • Types of lifting accessories — slings, chains, shackles, eyebolts
  • Inspection and rejection of lifting accessories
  • Load assessment and centre of gravity
  • Slinging techniques for different load types
  • Standard banksman hand signals
  • Communication between slinger/signaller and crane operator
  • Safe working practices and exclusion zones
  • Practical assessment

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for anyone who attaches loads to cranes, acts as a banksman, or directs crane movements as part of their work. It is often taken alongside crane operator training or as a standalone qualification.

Assessment and certification

The course includes a theory assessment and a practical assessment. Delegates who meet the required standard receive an AITT accredited certificate.
